Thinking about this talk by @nationbuilder on the Thinking about this talk by @nationbuilder on the two ways of drawing closer to Allah. “See there’s two schools,” says Shaykh Muhammad Alshareef in one of his talks. “There’s the school of pain and that brings people back to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى), but there’s also the school of thankfulness, meaning when the good times come if you are thankful to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى), you can actually have more good things coming to your life, because that is the promise of Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) for those who are thankful.” I would like to draw closer to Allah (swt) through the school of thankfulness. These are the days of Hajj. Millions will be reena These are the days of Hajj. Millions will be reenacting the footsteps of Hajar رضى الله عنها, the wife of Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام during these blessed days. They will run back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times to complete the necessary rituals of the Hajj – reenacting the struggle of a mother thousands of years ago in a barren desert, under the scorching sun, as she ran up and down and back and forth between Mount Safa and Mount Marwa looking for water to nurse her thirsty, crying baby. Many of us know of this story and the fact that the Sa’ee or the ritual of running seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa commemorates the struggle of Hajar رضى الله عنها. However, not all of us have heard the words she said prior to this struggle that echoed deep into the desert as her husband walked off leaving her alone with her infant son and only a small amount of food and water in a barren desert with no water and no human population in sight. Those words may have been murmured softly under the blazing sun and sweltering heat, but they were strong enough to make the heavens move. Those words are the epitome of trust in Allah. A trust that made her an icon of spiritual conviction, resilience and strength. As Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام started walking away after leaving his wife and infant child Ismail عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام in the middle of the desert with only a small amount of dates and a small water-skin containing some water, Hajar رضى الله عنها followed him saying: “O Ibrahim! Where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no person whose company we may enjoy, nor is there anything (to enjoy)?” She repeated that to him many times, but he did not look back at her. Going through difficult times? Feeling overwhelmed Going through difficult times? Feeling overwhelmed or anxious? Have a test or exam? A difficult report to submit? An impossible deadline to meet? Going through a surgery or medical procedure? Experiencing an illness or loss? Going though labor and delivery? Facing a difficult crossroads in life? THIS is the dua to have on your lips. Allah can make the difficult easy. He can calm your heart. He can reduce the anxiety. He can reduce the pain. He can increase your threshold of pain. He can give you an anaesthetic from His power that eases the pain. He can make the worldly medicine work for you or He could make any medicine lose its effect. He can get rid of the pain or He can give you more strength to bear the pain. He can give you the energy to go on despite the difficulty. He can pour hope and positivity in your heart. He can make you achieve an almost insurmountable task. He can make the task easy for you. He is Al-Qawi, the Possessor of All Strength. Ever wondered why certain things are easy for some people and so difficult for others? Because Allah gives each person different skills, abilities and different thresholds of experiencing difficulties. Allah has the power to make a thing easy for someone and the same thing difficult for another. The ease of something lies in Allah’s hands. Always ask Allah to make a task easy for you. And you will see yourself going through things and doing things you never knew you would be able to, with a strength you never knew you had. And may be when you look back at that time, you will marvel at how is easy it was made for you. Because Allah made it easy. Allah has the Power to do that. So, the next time you feel something is too difficult for you, remember the One Who Makes Ease and ask Him to make whatever you are going through easy for you. Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja`altahu sahla wa anta taj`al ul-hazna idha shi’ta sahla. O Allah! There is nothing made easy except what you make easy, and you make the difficult easy if you wish.
It's easy to sink into feelings of helplessness an It's easy to sink into feelings of helplessness and complacency during difficult times.  It is easy to just feel like the victim of our circumstances and to just be passively reacting to life as it happens.  But our deen teaches us to be proactive. To not just react but to plan and take action. Sometimes we get so overwhelmed with the problems Sometimes we get so overwhelmed with the problems in our lives.  We feel so confused, hopeless and anxious that we start thinking there is no way out at all.  That we are stuck in this situation and that nothing can change.  What we forget is that our understanding and imagination to find a solution may be limited, but the power of Allah is not.  Don't limit Allah's power by your imagination. Don't ever think you just have to live with the way things are if you can ask the Lord of the Worlds to make them better.  Allah is Al-Qadir, the Able. He is Al-Muqtadir, the All-Powerful. He can do what we cannot imagine. He is Al-Fattah, the Opener. He can open doors we could never imagine being opened for us. He is Al-Wahhab, the Giver of Gifts. He can give us things we could not even have imagined. Sometimes we don’t ask Allah for the things we w Sometimes we don’t ask Allah for the things we want.  Sometimes we try to change our duas to fit what we “should” be doing or what seems to be the right thing to do at this moment.  But we forget that our imagination and our understanding is often limited. And we limit our duas by what seems possible to us.  We forget that nothing is impossible for Allah.
